Mrs. Merchant's First Grade Class

What are the first grade classes working on?

In Math they’ve been working on patterns and graphs.

Science is very hands on! They’re exploring matter (liquid and solids).

Last month’s Language Arts theme was “Guess Who” and the girls worked on sequencing, predicting, creating lists, contractions and naming parts.  This month’s theme is “Catch a Dream”

Last month teams got to investigate a pumpkin.  They took a walking trip to Puritas Nursery were each team chose a big pumpkin. They weighed it and measured it and got to guess if it would float or not and then test to see if they’re predictions were right.  They even opened their pumpkins, dug out the seeds and COUNTED all of them!  Mrs. Humphrey said they did an Awesome job!  Ms. Merchant’s class got pumpkins to explore, also.  Great job, girls!

This month the special activity is dressing up Tom the Turkey and Mrs. Humphrey’s class will be adding a Teepee to the room to read in and trying to create their own totem pole!

The girls are starting Reader’s Theater where the girls act out short stories and Poetry Café where the girls get to recite poems weekly.

Mrs. Humphrey’s class is reading Charlotte’s Web.

To help reinforce lessons at home be sure to complete the weekly Homefun Folders.

¨ Read daily for the Cavs Read to Achieve Program. 

¨ Play games together.  Have a family game night.  Turn off the TVs and computers and have fun!

¨ This month discuss Thanksgiving with you family.  How do you celebrate?  What traditions do you have?  What is your family thankful for?
